Lesser-Known Gems in Our Catalogue: Silverwing

Shade, a young silverwing bat, gets separated from his colony shortly before his first migration. With the help of a little brown bat named Marina, he must migrate on his own by using the directions his mother had sung to him in preparation for the journey.

A great (Canadian!) animal adventure for kids 8 and up, it may feature some moments that are a bit scary for younger children. One of the cool things about this book is how the author, Kenneth Oppel, incorporates echolocation into the story in ways that feel very natural and flow well with the story, making the reader feel like they’re getting a glimpse into what it would be like to use echolocation.

The book is the first in a trilogy, the other books being Sunwing and Firewing. There is also a prequel called Darkwing about a prehistoric bat from the time where bats had already developed flight but were still in the process of having echolocation and becoming nocturnal).

We have all the books in the series in our catalogue in several formats, as well as the tv series.
